3Removal and reinsertion in time’s stream. Clever trick, that.

The moment had arrived, and I soothed my frantic, fearful spirit as I expected at any moment to become Eve, to become the silent creature I had seen at Adam’s footsteps in that first day, some years in the future of this now, when Adam and Eve had arrived in the city.

One of the two Adams was invisibly lifted forward, while the other remained frozen in place, and matched to one of the two Liliths, the one destined to become Eve.

It was the other me. My other self. Of course. Or I would not be telling you this tale, for my other self (my self, I can now proudly say) had agreed to put aside all matters of ego and pride, all matters of truth, all matters of freedom, to become Duty and Strength to Adam, for better or for worse until she died.

A light sprang up for one last time between me and Eve, for now Eve I dub her, at once my Self and yet Other. I felt a part of my soul streaming out of my body even as I felt the onrush of a part of Eve’s soul entering it in the other direction. Adam’s two bodies were joined by a similar light and doubtless were experiencing the same thing.

It ended, and I felt suddenly as weak as a kitten, my breath coming in small pants. Yet I also felt powerful, bursting with power, as if I had but to point my finger and will a thing for it to be so. Eve, who had begun as I would have begun, apprehensive but resolute, hoping for the strength to endure, now stood strong and silent, yet meek and submissive. Only I knew the inner conflict she must be experiencing as she bowed to the yoke of God while He gave up her reins to Adam, to be his beast of burden, to be his source of strength.

God pointed to the west and in a voice of thunder spake unintelligible words. Adam took Eve by the hand, not ungently, and they fled, fled without looking back, fled whatever disaster God had warned Adam of (and that Eve knew was coming from simple memory, her own. Our own.)

Adam’s other self was left behind, wild eyed. Somehow this Adam was even more bestial than my Adam ever had been, even on that day, this day, when he had hurt me. This Adam-twin was crazy with fear, wild with anger, so much so that he frothed slightly at the mouth. God must have pulled all that was evil from Adam’s soul and concentrated it in this thing that was yet somehow human, still had a piece of the soul I had given him. He looked furtively around for some way to run, something to hurt, and his eye fell upon me. He took two steps towards me and then was cast back by an invisible hand accompanied by words of thunder.
